Events of the Jim Crow Era

    East St. Louise Massacre

When a heated labor dispute turned deadly, whites started beating and killing A.A. Members. These riots lasted nearly 3 days, killing 39 A.A.'s and 9 whites. However, some people believe that up to 100 A.A.'s were killed. Damage to homes and buildings were even more severe. Nearly 6,000 African Americans were left homeless and had nowhere to go. The East St. Louise Massacre is still widely known as "one of the worst cases of labor-related violence in 20th-century american history." Nearly 10,000 African Americans marched in silent protest through the street of New York, commemorating their losses.

Pictures shown from this massacre are even more brutal. Runs chills down your back.

    The Red Summer

July 27th, 1919: An African American man drowned in a lake after he violated unofficial segregation rules on the beach. He was stoned by a group of white boys. The police refused to arrest the boys for this, causing a huge riot between blacks and whites. On the southside of the neighborhood, these riots continued for days, eventually ending on August 13th. 15 whites and 23 blacks were killed, with over 500 injured. 1,000 black families lost their home.

    Rise of the K.K.K.

The K.K.K, a hate group dedicated to the belief that whites and whites only should live in America, was originally founded as a secret society. They lied low for a while, however, on August 18th, 1925, things changed. Nearly 50,000 members of the K.K.K marched through DC. Some of them even marched in the shape of a K. They did not cover their faces, because they found no reason to. There were millions of members across america during this time.

    Sundown Towns

Sundown Towns were towns that ranged all across the U.S. These towns were notoriously known for brutally beating and killing african americans if they were in the white part of town passed sundown. These towns did not only danger african americans, they threatened anyone who wasn't pure white.
