Was the Revolutionary War Fought to Protect Slavery?

This week, we watched the 1989 movie "Glory", directed by Edward Zwick in class today. Glory is an American War Film based on the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. The movie was based on the books "Lay this Laurel", by Lincoln Kirstein, "One Gallant Rush", by Peter Burchard, and the personal letters of Shaw. Overall, the film was nominated for five Academy Awards, and won three of them.

While many people may say that the Revolutionary war was not fought over slavery, this movie proves them wrong, in just about every way. Sure, it may not have been COMPLETELY about slavery, but a hell of a lot of it was. The first sign of this during the movie is when the Confederacy's response to the Emancipation Proclamation turned south, and they ordered that all black soldiers will be returned to slavery. Along with that, soldiers in a Union uniform were to be executed, along with white officers.

I'm gonna be honest, I didn't know all that much about the revolutionary war until now. I wasn't the type to pay attention in History class in high school. I originally believed what my friends and family told me, which was slavery was only a small part of the revolutionary war. Come to find out, this was not true at all. It was majority of it.

I'm happy I watched this movie. I learned a lot about the Revolutionary War I didn't know before, but wish I had. At least I know now.
